The researcher recruited will contribute to the development of the ARI Institute’s Anthropology of Music project and to its international influence. The position is oriented towards Anthropology of Music and Visual Anthropology. The aim is to produce a scientific documentary on “Musical practices in situations of forced migration”. The Communauté d’Agglomération Pays Basque finances the contract as part of its research development programme, in partnership with the CNRS.
To develop personal research on the theme of musical practices in situations of forced migration. By “musical practices”, we mean the production of music in situations of co-presence. In this context, the analyses may concern: musicians in professional circuits (festivals, theatres, teaching structures); institutional arrangements for integration through music (Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, universities, academies); actions of NGO structures mobilised in this sector; common practices of non-professional migrants; music teaching in migrant camps; music therapy.
The research may concern any cultural area.
The successful candidate will be required to produce a 52-minute documentary film. The resources of the ARI Institute will be made available. The successful candidate will be able to benefit from the support, advice and guidance of the Institute’s audiovisual department in the production of his/her scientific documentary.
Skills
Candidate with a PhD in Social Sciences. Disciplines: Social Anthropology, Ethnology, Ethnomusicology, Musicology, History, Political Science, Geography, Philosophy. Fluent English. French useful. Basque appreciated.
Competence in audiovisual tools is valued but is not required. The documentary film can be co-directed with Alexandra Ena, head of the audiovisual department.
Work context
The person recruited will be attached to Passages, Joint Research Unit 5319 of the CNRS, the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne, the University of Bordeaux, the University of Pau and the Pays de l’Adour and the École nationale supérieure d’architecture et de paysage de Bordeaux. The unit is located on four sites: Bordeaux-campus, Ensap-Bordeaux, Pau-university and the ARI Institute in Bayonne. Its members come from distinct disciplinary fields: geography and planning, environment and landscape, urban planning and architecture, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, musicology.
The ARI Institute (Basque Anthropological Research Institute on Music), is located at the Cité des Arts in Bayonne. It is subject to the internal rules of UMR 5319 Passages.
Residence in Bayonne is mandatory.
The young researcher will have an office at the ARI Institute (Cité des Arts, Bayonne), dedicated facilities and will work closely with the management of UMR Passages (Prof. Béatrice Collignon), the director of the ARI Institute (Prof. Denis Laborde) and the head of the audiovisual cluster (Alexandra Ena).
He or she will manage the Institute’s website and participate in the animation of the CNRS International Research Network that the ARI Institute leads (9 International Research Teams).
